Sheldon Day is "Back Home Again in Indiana"
Updated: Mar 27, 2020
A native of Indianapolis, who was a dominate defensive tackle during his days in South Bend, is back home again in Indiana. Sheldon Day, a contributing cog to the San Francisco 49ers drive to the 2019 season Super Bowl, was signed by the Indianapolis Colts to a free agent contract this week.
Day is expected to team up at the nose tackle position with Grover Stewart who performed well for the Colts at that position last season. Along with the recent signing of free agent QB Phillip Rivers, the Colts have made upgrading their defensive line an off season priority.
Day, a 4 star product out of Warren Central High School in Indianapolis had a monster season for the Irish in his Senior year, 2015. That year the Irish went 10-3 and saw the emergence of DeShone Kizer at QB. On defense the Irish were led by Jaylon Smith and Day. On the season, Day accumulated 15.5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks and earned All-American recognition.
During that season Day's mother Carol Boyd become a bit of a celebrity around Notre Dame stadium for her unrelenting and vocal support for her son. Her voice could frequently be heard above the din, "THAT'S MY BABY!"
Day himself earned notoriety beyond his play on the field for his role in the 2015 Showtime reality program, "A Season with Notre Dame Football." In it, he was frequently featured with his roommate, freshman Jerry Tillery. Memorably, Day who would refer to his roommate as "Terry Jillery", poked fun at Tillery, often with hilarious affect.
Day was selected in the 4th round by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2016 NFL draft. He then followed one of his Jacksonville defensive coaches to San Francisco after the 2017 season and became a part of their regular defensive line rotation.
Day is the second addition to the Colts defensive line during this off season to come from San Francisco. In mid-March the Colts acquired 49ers All-Pro Defensive Tackle DeForest Buckner in exchange for their 2020 1st round draft pick.
