According to Tim Prister at IrishIlustrated.com, Cain "Dump Truck" Madden, a 6-3, 313 pound guard will spend his grad transfer season in South Bend. An All-American last season at Marshall, according to The Athletic Madden was considered the 10th best grad-transfer player available in the transfer portal. Presumed starting QB for the coming season Jack Coan, was rated seventh.
At Marshall, Madden started 31 games. In 2019 he was credited with 64 knockdown blocks in his red-shirt junior season, thus earning his colorful nickname.
The Thundering Herd finished 2020 with a 7-3 record and compete in Conference USA. Madden earned post season honors last season that included 1st team All-American from The Athletic, and 2nd team from the Associated Press. He is rated as the top overall returning right guard in the country by Pro Football Focus.
Madden hails from South Webster, Ohio and joined the Herd as a walk-on in 2016 after being twice named All-State at Minford High School. Notre Dame won the battle for Madden's services after a strong push from Florida State who appeared to have been the favorite to land his services. A visit to South Bend this week that came directly after a trip to FSU turned the tide to ND's favor.
Madden joins an offensive line room that is long on talent but short on experience. Only Jarrett Patterson returns from last year's season starting line. In the Spring true freshmen Blake Fisher (T) and Rocco Spindler (G) and RS-freshman Tosh Baker (T) saw extensive first team action for the Irish.
Pencil in "The Dump Truck" to take over at RG with Jush Lugg filling the RT spot, Zeke Correll at C , Blake Fisher at LT and Jarrett Patterson at LG.
