All-Time Irish Hero: Michael Floyd

In 2008 Michael Floyd, a 3-sport star out of Cretin-Derham High School in St. Paul Minnesota was a 5-star recruit rated as the 15th best player in the nation. He committed to Notre Dame and there were lofty expectations for the pass catcher, expectations Floyd lived up to.

Once he arrived in South Bend, Charlie Weis plugged Floyd right in to his pass happy offense and Jimmy Clausen had found himself a partner in aerial football warfare. Just a few minutes into the season Floyd caught his first touchdown pass, becoming the first ever ND freshman to score a seasons first points. He finished the season with 7 touchdown passes and 719 receiving yards, setting freshman school records in the process.

His sophomore season Floyd broke his collarbone after four games, but came back later in the year and in just 7 games total managed 9 touchdowns on 44 catches good for 795 yards. Against Nevada that season he had a 4 catch 189-yard game that included 3 touchdowns one from 88 yards out another from 70 yards out.

By his Junior year with the NFL taking notice and Brian Kelly came to town. Floyd was a centerpiece of Kelly's first team, totaling 79 catches, 1025 yards, 12 touchdowns. Dayne Crist threw most of those passes on a team that finished 8-5.

Floyd’s career got sidetracked after the season however. In March he was suspended by Kelly after being cited for drunken driving. He missed spring practice and much of the the run up to the 2011 season but earned his way back on the team in early August. He went on to another terrific year notching 9 touchdowns on 100 catches and 1147 yards.

For his career, Floyd holds ND records for receptions (271), yards receiving (3,686) and touchdowns (37). His 100 catches in 2011 is a ND season record.

At 6-3, 220 pounds Michel Floyd had an explosive and physical presence on the field. And the impressive 2019 accomplishments of Chase Claypool notwithstanding, arguably Floyd was best receiver of the Brian Kelly era.

Floyd was the 13th overall pick of the 2012 draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He has had an 8 year career scoring 25 touchdowns and gained just short of 4000 yards. Floyd earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 2016 New England Patriots.

For Michael Floyd's impressive record setting accomplishments, he is an All-Time Irish Hero.
